Our Scottish campervan adventure: Part two

Angela and Trevor cross the Forth Road Bridge to Fife in search of more Outlander film locations as they continue their epic Scottish campervan adventure in a Sussex Campervans NV200 CamperCar

The Starlight Silver Nissan NV200 campervan is compact enough to drive anywhere in Scotland.

Our Scottish campervan adventure was a fantastic opportunity for us to visit historic places featured in our favourite TV drama series, Outlander. We had set off in our Sussex Campervans Nissan NV200 CamperCar, determined to see as much as we could and find out more about Scotland’s past. Outlander is set against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion.

There’s a new series of Outlander coming soon, so now is a good time to catch up with the series if you don’t know it. It’s a brilliant drama, and it absolutely inspired us to set off on our first Scottish campervan adventure.

Days six to eight – the Forth Road Bridge

Crossing the Forth Road Bridge marked an exciting new phase in our epic Nissan NV200 CamperCar holiday in Scotland.

Angela and Trevor took some spectacular photos during their campervan tour of Scotland.

We travelled over to Fife

Lots of campsites were full over the May Bank Holiday weekend, so we booked into Woodland Gardens Campsite, Lundin Links, in Fife, for four nights of our 19-day Scottish campervan adventure. We can highly recommended it as a place to stay. It’s only small but the owners are lovely and they certainly take a lot of care over the details, even providing toiletries in the showers. It’s perfect and it’s also near the sea. To get to it, you have to drive through Kirkcaldy, which we didn’t like, but after that the whole Fife coast is great, full of peaceful little fishing villages and harbours.

While staying at Woodland Gardens Campsite, we visited: Kellie Castle and gardens – where we had a guided tour, then Pittenweem – a charming fishing village with a harbour, local shops and art galleries. We went on to Anstruther – a pretty coastal town with a stream running through it, then visited Crail, which is famous for fresh shellfish and the Crail Food Festival.

Fishing harbours were on the itinerary of 'must see' places to visit during their campervan holiday in Scotland.

Next, we visited the coastal headland nature reserve at Fife Ness, before moving on to see Saint Monans, a fishing port with 17th-century pantiled houses huddled beside the harbour. Moving down the coast, we went to the seaside resort of Elie, with its yachts, surfers and golden sand.

Dysart Harbour  and Harbourmaster’s House was the next stop – it’s where the main characters Claire, Jamie and Murtagh met their nemesis the Comte St Germain in Outlander.
We went on to Falkland Palace and village – once the country residence of Scotland’s Stewart kings and queens, who hunted boar and deer in the forests of Fife. It’s also another lovely filming location used in Outlander.

Angela and Trevor walked on Elie Beach during their campervan tour of Scotland.

We also did a 12-mile walk on a really hot day from our campsite to Elie on the coastal path and beach. It was lovely, but oh, we were so shattered afterwards, we were so glad to get back to our Nissan NV200 CamperCar from Sussex Campervans for a rest. We saw entrants to a scarecrow competition during our walk, which added to the fun.
