THE COMPLETE LONDON ULEZ GUIDE FOR CAMPERVANS

IN 2023 SADIQ KAHN ANNOUNCED THAT SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THE ULEZ MAP WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED. THE CLAIM USED TO SUPPORT THIS CHANGE IS THAT SOMETHING URGENTLY NEEDS TO BE DONE TO COMBAT POLLUTION AND THE AIR QUALITY IN LONDON.
THE FIRST ULEZ ZONE WAS ANNOUNCED IN 2014 BY BORIS JOHNSON AND FINALLY INTRODUCED IN 2019 BY SADIQ KAHN IN 2019.

WHAT IS ULEZ AND HOW IS IT CHANGING?

Ulez Stands for Ultra Low Emissions Zone. These zones are created to help enforce cleaner air standards in big cities like London. This is achieved by charging high-emission and older vehicles that travel through the zone a daily fee.

The big change for 2023 is that the zone is expanding quiet a considerable distance. The expansion will now cover almost the entirety of Greater London.

WHERE ARE THE NEW ULEZ ZONES?

A lot of places that were previously exempt will now fall under the new Ulez 2023 zone. These include the following:

HOW MUCH IS THE NEW ULEZ CHARGE?

Vehicles operating within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) must adhere to specific emission standards. Non-compliant vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, vans (up to 3.5 tonnes), and minibuses (up to 5 tonnes), incur a daily £12.50 charge for zone access.

 HOW DO YOU PAY THE NEW ULEZ CHARGE?

So how can road users pay the new Ulez charge if they happen to travel through the designated zones?

You can pay the Ulez Charge Online here.

Make sure that when you pay online you use the Official Transport for London Website. Do not use other websites or third-party applications as this could lead to you being scammed.

You can also setup an automatic pay option if you are going to be repeatedly traveling through the Ulez zone.

There are other payment methods available such as downloading the official app for Ulez.

ARE THERE ANY DISCOUNTS, EXEMPTIONS, OR SUPPORT PLANS?

Currently all vehicles are exempt from the ULEZ charge on Christmas Day.

 

OTHER ULTRA LOW EMISSION ZONE (ULEZ) DISCOUNTS AND EXEMPTIONS:
1.      VEHICLES FOR DISABLED PEOPLE:

Blue Badge holders pay the ULEZ charge unless their vehicle meets ULEZ standards or qualifies for specific grace periods.

Vehicles registered as ‘Disabled’ or ‘Disabled Passenger Vehicle’ are exempt until 24 October 2027.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAV) and those receiving certain disability benefits have grace periods.

2.      NHS PATIENTS:

If deemed too ill for public transport, patients may get ULEZ and Congestion Charge reimbursements from their hospital.

3.      TAXIS:

London-licensed taxis are ULEZ exempt. New taxis must be zero-emission capable.

4.      BUSINESSES AND CHARITIES:

Small businesses, charities, and sole traders in London can get short-term ULEZ exemptions if they’ve ordered compliant vehicles or booked retrofitting by 29 November 2023.

5. COMMUNITY TRANSPORT MINIBUSES:

Not-for-profit minibuses can register for a 100% ULEZ discount until 26 October 2025.

6.      PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLES (PHVS):

Wheelchair accessible PHVs have a grace period until 24 October 2027 when used for private hire bookings.

7.      HISTORIC VEHICLES:

Vehicles built before 1 January 1973 and those over 40 years old registered as historic are exempt.

8.      OTHER EXEMPTIONS:

Some vehicles, like agricultural and military vehicles, mobile cranes, and certain cranes, are exempt.

9.      SHOWMAN’S VEHICLES:

Some showman’s vehicles, modified or specially constructed for shows, can get a 100% ULEZ discount.
