Our 6 Favourite Campsites in the South East
The south-east is one of the most visited areas of England, mainly due to it's close proximity to London. Also attracting visitors are the varied natural landscapes, luxurious stately homes, historic towns and cities and globally-renowned gardens. Exploring this area in a campervan is one of the easiest ways to take in all that 'The Beautiful South' has to offer. Here are our six favourite campsites.
Spring Lane, Slinfold, Horsham, West Sussex RH13 0RT
01403 790 269
Yvonne: I like Slinfold Club site. It’s on the Downs Link old railway path for walkers, cyclists and horses. When we stayed we had a nice walk to The Milk Churn café at The Brickworks in Rudgwick, which specialises in Sussex cheeses. The Charmer cheese on toast is delicious. We also went to the Firebird brewery there, which sells beer-making kits.
Stalkers Lane, East Hoathly, Lewes, East Sussex BN8 6QS
Yvonne: It’s Larry’s favourite - a ‘no facilities’ place with a woodland dog walk and we like to pitch in the woods on grass and under the trees. One autumn we were kept awake all night by acorns falling on the roof! There are some hardstandings.
Hundred Acres Road, Wickham, Fareham, Hampshire PO17 6JR
01329 834 085
Yvonne: There’s a good dog walk here and play equipment for kids, plus a mobile fish & chip van. It’s handy for visiting Portsmouth’s Historic Shipyard.
Church Lane, Kenardington, Ashford, Kent TN26 2NQ
01233 733 635
Kate & Richard: “Small facilities (three toilets, a shower, electric hook-ups and a kids’ play area). We like it for a quick night away without driving too far. As soon as we’re away from home we relax.” Attractions: Military Canal, Rye, South of England Rare Breeds Centre, Miniature Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway at Dungeness.
3 Cackle St, Rye, East Sussex TN31 6DY
01424 883 570
Kate & Richard: We like the little less regimented campsites like this one. But if it’s a bank holiday we go to places with more facilities. Firebowls allowed.
The Avenue, Kingsdown, Deal, Kent CT14 8DU
01304 373 713
Kate & Richard: The first time we went there were about five people there and we thought it was peaceful and lovely. It’s the scenery we like - we couldn’t believe you could wake up to that sea view. Next time we went it was like Glastonbury! They host events sometimes - but the facilities can cope with it.
